When I bought a dual-band router a year ago, the wifi card didn't scream 'I can do 5 GHz.' Imagine my surprise, after all this time. Since I tend to run with the router's SSID turned off, I guess I missed any 5 GHz clue.

The Dell wifi-software (in this Inspiron 1520 laptop) was NOT stable, slowing down and dropping connections continually.
The Dell wifi-software lead me on an education about troubleshooting wireless connections until I figured out that it's best to un-install the Dell wifi-software. After that, the laptop was left with the 'generic' Intel wifi-software, which works just fine, perfectly stable, and I don't recall ever having a problem with 'lost functionality' after reverting to it. Well, maybe the Intel software isn't quite as colorful as Dell's, but it works fine.

A good place to start is to make sure you have the right cable (Null modem or straight) and the correct port settings. More likely there is some configuration issue or connection problem with the Dell switch.
