The purchase and download of Windows 8 Pro on October 26th went fine. The install started, and then died when Windows 8 reported that the Intel Primary IDE channel was incompatible.
Color me surprised, because that same Intel Ultra-ATA/100 IDE controller is working just fine on three machines under Windows 7 Pro, and they required no special drivers or installation techniques.
These are IBM dual-socket 3.2Ghz Xeon workstations, 4Gb memory, with AGP video slots and plenty of horsepower for Windows 7 Pro. They shouldn't need much massaging to run Windows 8 Pro.
I saw no independent Intel Ultra-ATA/100 IDE controller drivers, nor did I see this issue discussed elsewhere in the Windows 8 forum. I'm curious what my options are now that I committed to buying and installing an operating system upgrade that won't install. Can I use a Windows 7 driver, or can I request a refund from Microsoft and simply delete the downloaded installation?
